Choosing Chamber Music - strings (and strings with wind)
If you are unfamiliar with the chamber music repertoire, or want to expand it but are unsure what to get, we recommend you buy a copy of CHAMBER MUSIC REPERTOIRE FOR AMATEUR PLAYERS by Harold Haynes, ISBN 0 9524572 2 9.

Spiral bound in yellow covers, subtitled 'A guide to choosing works matching player's abilities', this book lists from a quality of music perspective, and indicates the difficulty of the parts. The focus is on strings and piano with strings, but there is a section on wind with strings. There are helpful sections such as 'choosing string quartets for mixed ability players.

Another interesting choice is the Merton Music string chamber music catalogue. This lists nearly 1000 items of rare and unusual chamber music - which you can buy at a flat rate of 10p per page. Whilst some of the music is rather uninspired, there are some real gems, and it is certainly good value for money. It also categorises the parts according to difficulty. Contact Theo Wyatt, 8 Wilton Grove, London SW19 3QX, phone 020 8540 2708, email mertonmusic@argonet.co.uk.

Choosing Chamber Music - wind (and wind with strings)
The most extensive choice of chamber music for wind instruments can be found on the web site for June Emerson - Wind Music. They also produce several hard copy catalogues for different sections of wind chamber music - these are free apart from postage. Copies are available to consult from Ron Keefe.

Another good supplier is Jonathan Myall Music (also known as Just Flutes). They specialise in flute music but have an extensive stock of chamber music for all combinations of wind instruments.

In addition the are many small publishers of wind chamber music which can be found by searching the web.

Don't forget to use the music collection in Ealing Central Library and also the Music section of Westminster Library.

If you know of another good chamber music directory, then let us know!
